The oven and homemade sweets

Lard cakes, grape-must cakes and pumpkin paparajotes are part of the selection this route devotes to home cooking.

Their names already offer a first clue about the ingredients and the relationship between the recipes and the products available. Grape must connects baking with the grape harvest; lard, with making use of the products from the slaughter; and pumpkin, with the vegetable garden. The oven was one of the places where those products were transformed, although not all the preparations followed the same process.

Alongside the ingredients, each family preserves its own ways of measuring, mixing and recognising when the mixture is just right. Getting to know these sweets offers a way to discover a heritage passed down through generations, in which memory is also made up of gestures, aromas and flavours.
