Cerro del Real

Excavations carried out in 1962 and 1963 identified a succession of occupations from the Late Bronze Age to Roman times. Among the oldest evidence are the Late Bronze Age huts; later, the settlement became an Iberian city and remained occupied under Rome. The inscriptions preserved at the Museo de Galera help us recognize this period in its history.
To understand the site as a whole, we must also look at its surroundings: south of the settlement lies the sanctuary of Cerro del Castillo, a space distinct from the residential area. Remains attributed to a Visigothic church have also been noted, pointing to the periods after Rome. The name Cerro del Real recalls another moment: the site of Don Juan de Austria’s camp during the siege of Galera in 1570.
